Why I Love Bamboo Rib Knit for Kids Clothing

That’s my favourite fabric, bamboo rib knit.
It’s the fabric I absolutely love for clothing for babies and kids because it checks so many boxes. It’s soft without feeling slippery, breathable without feeling clingy, and durable enough to keep up with busy little ones who are constantly on the move.
As a Canadian handmade children’s clothing brand, I’m always searching for fabrics that feel beautiful but also hold up to everyday wear. Bamboo rib knit has become my favourite for this reason.
What is bamboo rib knit?
Bamboo rib knit is a stretchy knit fabric with subtle raised ribs woven into the fabric. Those tiny ribs give the fabric texture, movement, and structure without making it feel heavy or clingy. The blend I use is 95% bamboo and 5% spandex. The spandex adds beautiful recovery so the clothing will hold up through hundreds of machine wash and dry cycles.

Why I love bamboo clothing for kids
It’s incredibly soft
This is usually the first thing people notice.
Bamboo fabric has a smooth, buttery softness that feels gentle against sensitive skin. The rib knit version takes that softness to another level because the texture allows the fabric to move naturally instead of feeling clingy or damp.
Kids want comfortable clothes. Parents want clothes their children will actually wear. Bamboo clothing tends to become the piece they reach for first.
It’s breathable for year-round wear
One of my favourite things about bamboo kids clothing is how breathable it is.
On warm days, bamboo fabric feels light and airy. On cooler days, it layers beautifully under sweaters or jackets without feeling bulky.
That makes bamboo tees and dresses especially practical for Canadian weather, where mornings can start cool and afternoons can suddenly feel like summer.
The rib knit drapes beautifully
Not all rib fabrics are the same.
Some rib knits can feel tight or clingy, especially in dresses or fitted tops. The bamboo rib knit I use has a soft and gentle drape that hangs nicely on the body and moves comfortably with kids while they play.
It’s one of the reasons I love using it for tee dresses, twirl dresses and curved hem tees. The fabric flows beautifully while still holding its shape.
It washes so well
As a mom of three, I know kids clothing has to survive real life.
Messy snacks. Playground dirt. Constant washing.

Every Wheat & Wildflower piece is sewn in Manitoba by myself and a small team of rural Canadian seamstresses. Keeping production local allows me to focus on small batches, thoughtful quality, and designs that are made to last.
I also intentionally choose artwork created by real artists, many of them Canadian, instead of using AI-generated designs.
